Our new boozy cupcake was inspired (demanded) by my father, AKA Big G. A man of diverse tastes and interests in the food & booze realm. I recollect moments of food with him in small freeze frames in my mind. A spoon of homemade grape jelly, a slice of beef marinated in just the right teriyaki sauce, a piece of horseradish cheese, apple barrel schnapps and the dessert always “tweaked” with something special. Recipes in his world have notes scribbled in the margins and special secret ingredients tucked inside.

For spring break I traveled to his fishing resort in Florida.. nestled in the backwoods, on vast amounts of water. Trails End Fishing Resort is the perfect place to find this flavor combination. Fresh strawberries, moonshine, and oranges. He presented this cake as an offering and a bribe…. Have you ever eaten cake with a spoon.. soaked with moonshine and orange zest dripping down your chin? Snuck out of your cabin, in the dark, with the threat of gators and snakes ? I have.. for another bite of this cake.
